Parents in Business Magazine Spring 2022

Parents in Business Magazine Spring 2022

The theme of this issue is overcoming adversity. We all may face adversity at some point, but some of us are able to flourish when things get difficult, while others may struggle. When something bad happens in your life, how do you react? Do you approach the process of overcoming adversity as a learning opportunity, or do you let it throw you off your game? In our special feature, we take a closer look at what adversity is, accept it happens to everyone and learn steps to overcome adversity.

Vicky Brooks has developed multiple successful businesses; she has dealt with health issues since the age of 26, some of which would be enough to make most people give up on their dreams. Vicky shares her journey of hope and courage on page 18.

Our cover star is Graham Allcott. He is an author, podcaster, entrepreneur and single dad to his eight-year-old son. He has a global business based on helping people to improve productivity.

We have interviews with Sophie Meislin Baron, founder of Mamamade. And William and Kelsey Seymour, Earl and Countess of Yarmouth, the founders of St Maur, a hand-crafted premium elderflower liqueur from the Heart of England.

Performance Coach Mandy Evill shares why mindset matters in business. Mindset is our thoughts and beliefs that shape our behaviours and actions. Mindset creates 95% of all our results. Spending time developing your mindset is the best investment you could make into your business on page 26.

Get to know Clare Morris CMR

Clare Morris CMR

Clare Morris is the Parents in Business Magazine “business troubleshooter”. Get to know Clare in this interview!

Business name

CMR

Tell us about you and your family?

I live outside Cambridge with my partner. We spend as much time as possible outdoors. Together we garden for wildlife and biodiversity. Independently I run, using this time to reflect, clear my thoughts and rebalance my day. My family consists of me and three brothers, my nieces and nephews. We didn’t grow up together, my father remarried, but are a loving and tight family. My father died very recently and my mother went into care, she has Alzheimer’s, and I have been through the menopause and am on HRT. So if any of these areas resonate with you, I am very happy to support and listen wherever you need me.

Tell us about your business journey. How did you get here?

My Mother worked in the university and had done since leaving school and was very keen for me to find a job for life. But I didn’t even know who I was at this stage. My school years had been hard, my parents split up before I went to secondary school and my work really suffered.

I came out with O’levels that I had no idea what to do with. I went to business school and left after the first year so that I could leave home. I had a Saturday job at Miss Selfridge and they took me on full time. I found a room in a shared house. And I felt rich and independent.

Then I joined a big insurance company in business support. This was terrible. So rigid and male-dominated. Lots of banter and extramarital affairs. I was 20 and sad.

I was headhunted by a small independent insurance agent, we worked together and built a team of up to 4. Had a great time. But insurance was still very stiff. All about telling by selling, the fear of not being insured if you died, had a fire, theft. Not very customer conscious.

I left here and moved to the Home Counties and while job hunting a recruitment agency offered me a job. It was perfect. Helping people, listening to their stories, finding the right path with them, for their future. And getting paid. What I didn’t realise is that I had joined a truly ethical independent business. So when I returned to Cambridge (my stepfather went missing while holidaying in Italy and my mother was all alone) and joined another agency it was such a shock that they didn’t hold the principles I had become so comfortable with in recruitment. It was aggressive, sales on the board, all numbers and no humanity. I suffered from it.

At this point, I also began to understand a bit more about myself. I could be successful if I was happy. I wasn’t happy in a hard sell environment. I wasn’t happy if I couldn’t relate to the product/service I was selling. And I could sell if given the support and tools of an honest, ethical company.

Also what happened was I realised that my mental health was very much attached to who I worked with and how I lived. Up to this point, it had been a bit of a party lifestyle. Hard work, big nights out, be one of the team. But often this didn’t ring true and I papered over the cracks.

I took time out and went back to retail but this time into Habitat. It was glorious. Our products were designed and made by real people, who also had a story and we learnt these to sell to our customers. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all great – the general public can be a bit difficult!! But the teamwork – it was so full of creatives and generous souls – that I felt really comfortable.

I stayed for a few years then went to work with an independent interior designer as their project support person. Sourcing products, running projects, setting up their systems, a website, database. Pulling all the parts of a business model (without realising what it was) together so that we functioned well across all areas – customer, supplier, team, service, finance etc.

We worked together until I was made redundant, by which time I had been asked by a couple of other designers if I could come in and do the same for them and my self-employed life began…

Since then I have studied and worked to further position myself and CMR into a business offer that develops owners who don’t want to fit the hard sell, number crunching, aggressive growth mold. For business owners who may be nervous, shy, overwhelmed or unsure about their business offering and how to connect with their customers.
So in effect, I created CMR to help people like me!

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome? What did you gain by defeating it?

Setting up my business following redundancy. I felt abandoned and lacked control over my destiny. After several interviews, and offers of work, I knew that it was meant to be. That I could start a business that filled a gap for sensitive business owners who although they may feel lacking in competitive business skills are confident in their product or service and just need a guiding hand in how this works outside a traditional framework.

I talked with a business adviser, through the job centre. They were concerned about me starting a business but hugely supportive in directing me towards business classes that would support my journey.

And I talked with a therapist, because my feelings around confidence and being cast aside in my early forties, were then also connected with perimenopause. It was a revelation but one that I didn’t connect with for several years. A challenge I wish I had tackled sooner. However, when I did it was to be one of the biggest of my life.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

Knowing myself better means I see the signs of overwhelm sooner. So I review my calendar, make sure the breaks I need to recharge are there. That wherever I can afford to do so, I outsource jobs that give me stress. Positivity for me comes through my work and being outdoors so that balance is fine and needs to be carefully managed.

What have been your proudest moments?

Changing my business was such a big moment for me. I moved completely into business owner growth and development and that was when I knew I had absolutely nailed my business value. And learning to snowboard at 40!

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Listen to yourself. I am still learning but now sit with my decisions, emotions and physical ailments to see where they are connected and what I need to do to relieve or improve them.

Who or what inspires you?

I genuinely create and share energy with others. Feeling uplifted by my friends and clients passion and humour. Being joyful, something I think we have all struggled with over the last few years and now I feel I have a better understanding of what that feels like and how to keep it in my day, life and business.

Parents in Business Magazine Issue 9

Parents in Business Magazine Issue 9

Welcome to the Parents in Business magazine

Many of us over the past few months continue to face upheaval in our lives. Many business owners are still grappling with the impact that Covid-19 is having on their day-to-day life. In this issue, we are committed to supporting you to bounce back and thrive in your business.

Catherine Erdly gives actionable steps on using the Coronavirus crisis to assess your business and come back stronger. Zuzana Taylor writes how to transform your mindset to achieve success.

We have a special feature 5 parents share how they are going to bounce back and thrive. These individuals all represent a real sense of determination and grit. These are professionals who have managed to really be more in the face of a challenge. They have demonstrated that they are willing and inclined to fight for their business, and we’re very proud to hear their stories. The lesson to learn here is that when it comes to what can be done in the face of overwhelming odds, it’s sometimes better to hang up the rulebook and decide for yourself. These incredible people proved that they weren’t afraid to try and move on, and they did so well. Their stories are far from over, but the legacy that they have created and the impact they will have for business owners struggling with COVID-19 right now can not be underestimated.

We have inspiring interviews with Shakira Taylor Founder of Fitness with Shakira you’ll read how she has diversified her income streams. Rob Moore Author, Property Investor & Disruptive Entrepreneur who became a millionaire before the age of 31. And in our interview with Rosey Davidson, Founder of Just Chill Baby Sleep shares how her sleep experience with her own children inspired her to start her business and help other parents.

We are shinning the small business spotlight on Mama And Me Doula Services Founded by Vanisha Virgo.
