There are so many benefits to running your own business, it is why so many parent entrepreneurs start new businesses while looking after small kids, and it is the reason many people get their own business established before the children arrive on the scene. If you prefer to have some hours off in the day and work evenings, this is, of course, fine and suits many people better, but the important take away is to make the distinction on times and stick with it.

Trade-Off With Flexibility

On occasions, you may find that you plans clash with the needs of your client, and if there really is no way around it, you might have to make tweaks to your time. If you absolutely need to be in the office when you planned not to be, try and trade-off that time to yourself. It is important you balance your needs with your business needs; otherwise, you risk burning out or getting sick.

Hire Help

Help comes in many different ways, and if you do not want to get involved in the rigmarole of staff, why not consider freelancers and outsourcing. Freelancers have their own business and provide specific skills like bookkeeping or graphic design. If there is a skillset you are missing, meaning it would take you hours to get the job done, consider outsourcing it to someone who does it for a living. The help doesn’t have to end with the business; there are plenty of self-employed cleaners and domestic help that can help you restore a work-life balance by taking the pressure off at home. Believe it or not, it is actually ok to say no. Clients are often more understanding that you initially panic they will be and saying things like ‘No I cannot do that this week but I would be more than happy to do it next week’ are often so much better received than you think. There is no point taking on too much and running yourself ragged as the quality of your work will slip, so create a manageable workload plan and only take on what you can handle with room to negotiate.

  1. Take a Break

The number of small business owners that not only confess to working weekends and evenings but also never daring to take time off for fear of what might happen is scary. We are only human, and recharging is so important for self-care, so book vacation or if funds are tight a staycation but whatever you do stay away from the office.

  1. Catch Those Zzzz’s

Sleep is essential, and we function better with it, rather than without. The temptation to keep working or catching up on housework is huge, but it really is not going to help in the end. A business is a marathon, not a sprint, so you need to put measures in place to rest regularly. Leave the phone outside the bedroom and focus on resting and not worrying about the day job.

Eating on the fly can seem like the only logical move to make when you have a to-do list that reaches the floor, but the downsides are huge. Firstly this tends to mean you reach for rubbish food and stockpile on empty calories, and secondly, your poor digestive system finds it hard to process. Stopping for just half an hour to eat healthy food, sat at a table, will make all the difference.

So, finally let’s be clear; asking for help is not a failing. Whether you ask an in-law to feed the kids one night a week, or need to hire a cleaner, you are not a superperson. There is only so much we can do, and if you earn more in an hour than a domestic cleaner the argument is pretty much made for you – spend the time you have wisely and take care of yourself.
